How to Make Your Fujifilm Digital Camera Look Like Film

The whole reason most of us shoot Fujifilm is the color science. But out of the box, even Fuji's JPEGs can feel too clean, too digital. Here's how to close that gap and get frames that genuinely feel like film.

1. Start with the Right Film Simulation

Not all simulations are created equal for the "film look." Your best starting points:

• Classic Negative -- closest to color negative film (Kodak Superia, Fuji Superia)
• Classic Chrome -- closest to slide film (Kodachrome-ish)
• Eterna -- closest to cinema film (low saturation, flat curve)
• Acros -- closest to black and white film (Neopan Acros)

2. Add Grain

Real film has grain. Fujifilm's built-in grain effect is subtle but effective. For a natural film look:

• Weak / Small -- mimics fine-grain 400 speed film
• Strong / Large -- mimics pushed 800-1600 speed film

Strong/Large is my go-to. It adds enough texture that photos don't look digitally smooth, but it's not so heavy that it becomes distracting.

3. Shift Your White Balance

This is the secret weapon most people overlook. Film stocks have inherent color biases -- Portra leans warm, Ektar leans cool, Superia has green in the shadows.

On Fujifilm, you can replicate this with WB Shift:

• Warm film (Portra, Superia): R:+3 to +4, B:-4 to -5
• Cool film (Ektar): R:-2, B:+2
• Neutral film: R:+1, B:-1

4. Manage Your Dynamic Range

Film handles highlights differently than digital. Set Dynamic Range to DR400 -- this compresses highlights and gives you more latitude in bright conditions, similar to how negative film holds highlights.

5. Embrace Imperfection

Film isn't perfect. Don't chase clinical sharpness -- set Sharpness to 0 or -1. Let the grain do the detail work. Film photos have a softness that's part of their appeal.
